Kerry Hamill’s and his two friends Stuart Glass and John Dewhirst were on board the 28ft yacht Foxy Lady moored near Koh Tang island off the coast of Cambodia when attacked by a Khmer Rouge gunboat in 1978.  As part of the memorial to the men the Kerry Hamill Trust will help establish and maintain marine reserve areas (MRAs) around some of the islands off the coast of Cambodia.

The fishery and marine life in the region have been adversely affected by over fishing, dredging and dynamiting of reefs.

Marine and environmental education programmes will be set up to help local community understand the importance of protecting the marine eco system.  The Kerry Hamill Trust is currently considering one such project that will be the first step towards achieving this goal.  The outcomes will include closer knit communities, sustainable fishery and eco-tourism opportunities.
